Cost

One of the most pressing issues that parents and students are concerned with is cost: how much will it cost to study abroad?

While this can be an intimidating process, if you keep in mind all of the different options presented to you, cost can be projected to include every expense, in addition to keeping a trip as cost efficient as possible. This page provides you with information on making cost a manageable endeavor, so that you can focus on the more exciting aspects of studying abroad.

When you decide to study abroad, you will meet with our office to complete a cost sheet, available for download from the online application. This cost sheet is used to project costs for your ENTIRE study abroad experience, with the hope of leaving no hidden costs or fees.

Some key things that will affect your cost:
  1. Destination - Where you go affects how much it will cost.
  2. Provider - Some providers are more expensive than others, because they provide additional excursions for no cost.
  3. When - The time you go will affect how much it costs. Summers are generally cheaper than Semesters, BUT, there is no financial aid associated with summer sessions.
  4. Stockton will only charge you a $200 application fee; the rest of your planned spending during a semester (only) can be applied towards studying abroad.

Different Costs
There are Study Abroad experiences to fit every student's budget, from as close as semester cost at Stockton to more pricer options.

Average Semester Costs
Studying abroad can cost anywhere from $13,000 to the low $20,000. The majority of programs will cost between $16,000-$18,000 per semester.

Average Summer Costs
Studying abroad can cost anywhere from $6,000 to $9,000 for a summer session.

Included in Your Costs
Tuition Fees, Airfare, Room, Living Expenses, Spending Cash, Laundry, Books, Travel Money, and more!

This is given to you in a neat easy to understand breakdown when you have your meeting to complete the cost sheet. To make this appointment, email us today!

Keep in Mind
The cost of your semester will vary depending if you are on campus or off campus; however, Stockton does not collect money from you during your abroad, all of that money is spent on studying abroad.

Example: If it costs you $13,500 for a semester at Stockton for tuition, fees and room & board, then that amount can be put towards the semester abroad!

Abroad Estimate:    $17,000*
Campus Estimate:  $13,000*

Any financial aid that you may be declining could potentially be applied towards study abroad as well. Check with Financial Aid for more information.

Scholarship & Funding

Students often are concerned about how they will fund their experiences abroad. Remember, if you are taking coursework for credit, most financial aid awards can be used abroad. To cover any gaps in funding, you should research and apply for scholarships. Providers, such as AIFS, CIEE, CIS, etc., typically offer scholarships and travel grants.There are also national programs such as the Fulbright, Boren and Gilman awards. Last, students have also raised funds through GoFundMe pages and other creative means. At Stockton, we offer two scholarships, the Office of Global Engagement award and the Stockton Foundation Study Abroad scholarship. You can apply for one or both of these scholarships when you complete your Sockton application.

The scholarships offered by Stockton University will appear on the online application as Section I and Section II. All students are eligible to apply for the scholarship under Section I. Students eligible for Section II must complete both Sections I and II of the application.

The Office of Global Engagement Scholarship (Section I)

The Office of Global Engagement (OGE) award amounts vary according to the type of travel. For short term faculty led programs, the amounts range from $300 to $500. For semester programs, they range from $600.00 to $1000.00. All students are eligible and encouraged to apply.

To be considered for an award, you must submit a screenshot of your financial aid package, if applicable, and an essay of 500-750 words demonstrating why you want to go abroad and addressing the following points:

  1. how the abroad experience relates to your personal/professional goals;
  2. how the award will make a difference in your ability to go abroad;
  3. how the experience might positively impact those close to you; and
  4. how you will share your experience with other Stockton students.

The Stockton University Foundation Scholarship for Education Abroad (Section II)

The Stockton University Foundation Scholarship for Education Abroad is available to students who have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 and who are studying abroad for a semester. The award amount is $500.00.

To be considered for this award, you must complete the additional Section II of the scholarship application. Under Section II, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  1. Name and amounts of current scholarships;
  2. awards and other recognition for community service, leadership, extracurricular activities,  etc.; and
  3. descriptions of community service activities with dates of service.

Application Process

The scholarship application is built into the online global opportunities application.  You will be required to provide proof of GPA, your Stockton Z number and a screenshot of your financial aid package, if applicable. The essay may be written directly in the application or copy and pasted or uploaded into the application.
