Statement on Use of Stockton University’s Website by Visitors

Stockton University is committed to providing access to services and information online in a manner that protects personal information and respecting the privacy, to the extent permitted by law, of visitors to our website. 

The stockton.edu website is provided to support Stockton’s mission and as a service for prospective students, parents, alumni, friends, supporters and the public. Stockton’s goStockton portal is provided as a service for students, faculty and staff who are subject to and should review the appropriate Guide to Information Technology Services along with the Acceptable Use Standards available on the web. Those who are authenticated and have a University user identification number and account shall be subject to Stockton’s policies; those affiliated with Stockton accessing the site not using their account shall be subject to the policies as well as this statement. Unauthenticated users having no account or identification number shall be subject to this statement. Use of this site for any purpose other than that for which it is intended is unauthorized and prohibited. Violators of this statement may have their access blocked. 

*Visitors to this site shall be any and all unauthenticated users meaning any user not having or using their Stockton University computer account or identification number. 


Data Collection and Use of Cookies

Stockton makes use of cookies to improve our visitors’ web experience. A cookie is a small piece of information sent by a web server to be stored on a web browser so that it can be read back later from that browser. The cookie may also be stored on the computer’s hard drive once a user logs off from that website or web server. A visitor can set one’s browser to decline or accept cookies. 

We also use other technologies with similar functionality to cookies, such as tracking URLs, pixels, mobile identifiers, and web beacons, to obtain data.

Purpose 

  • monitor and analyze the performance, operation, and effectiveness of stockton.edu 
  • better understand how you navigate through and interact with stockton.edu and to improve stockton.edu 
  • for purposes of our own analytics, research, product development, and regulatory compliance 
  • market content that is more relevant to a visitor 
  • enable you to use and access the University website and our secure payment services
  • enable, facilitate, and streamline the functioning of, and your access to, the stockton.edu and our payment services
  • enforce legal agreements that govern use of the University website
  • for fraud detection and prevention, and investigations 

Collection of this information is used to help diagnose problems with our server and administer the website by identifying which parts are most frequently used by visitors. Staff may, based on the collection of this information, tailor content to visitors’ needs and send promotional information or surveys (see below). 

Third Parties 

We may also allow certain third parties to place these technologies on the stockton.edu site. These third parties use these technologies to: 

  • help us analyze how you use stockton.edu, such as by noting the third party services from which you arrived 
  • collect information about your activities on stockton.edu, other sites, and/or the ads you have clicked on 
  • market and advertise to you on the University website and third party websites 
  • help us detect or prevent fraud or conduct risk assessments 

For example, to help us better understand how people use stockton.edu, some of our website properties use Google Analytics, Google Signals and other Google suite tools. To prevent Google Analytics from using your information for analytics, you may install the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser

Marketing services 

Third parties may also use such tracking technologies to serve ads that they believe are most likely to be of interest to you and measure the effectiveness of their ads both on stockton.edu and on other websites and online services. Targeting and advertising cookies we use may include Google, and other advertising networks and services we use from time to time. The Network Advertising initiative is a non-profit organization that is the leading self-regulatory association dedicated to responsible data collection and its use for digital advertising. To the extent advertising technology is integrated into stockton.edu and you opt-out of tailored advertising, you may still receive advertising content. In that case, the advertising content will just not be tailored to your interests. Also, we do not control any of these opt-out links and are not responsible for their availability or accuracy. 

Third party social plugins 

Stockton.edu may use social plugins provided and operated by third parties, such as Facebook. As a result of this, you may send to the third party the information that you are viewing on a certain part of stockton.edu. If you are logged in to your account with the third party, then the third party may be able to link information or actions about your interactions with stockton.edu to your account with them. Please refer to the third party’s privacy policies to learn more about its data practices. 

Security 

While Stockton is committed to ensuring the security of the site, as a visitor to the site, Stockton cannot guarantee there will be no security breaches. Stockton has in place reasonable technology designed to safeguard and prevent unauthorized access or misuse or alteration of information collected online; view Stockton’s Information Security Plan. Moreover, Stockton cannot guarantee the security of any information a visitor discloses online through interactive features such as forums, message boards, chat rooms or similar services. Therefore, visitors using such services disclose information at their own risk. 

In certain circumstances, Stockton will release information, without notice to the visitor/user about a visitor, and the visitor’s use of the site to comply with any valid legal process, such as a search warrant, subpoena, statute or court order, or in other special cases, such as an attempted breach of stockton.edu security. 

E-mail and Surveys 

Stockton may occasionally send visitors marketing or promotional email messages to inform users of new services or product announcements. In each email message visitors will have the ability to unsubscribe and/or opt-out of receipt of communications that are not in Stockton’s mission. Please follow instructions contained in those messages to opt-out. 

Stockton may request information through surveys, which visitors may choose to participate in on a voluntary basis. Information gathered may be used for marketing and promotional purposes or to notify you of new content, among other uses. If you e-mail us with questions or comments, we may use your personal information, in order, to respond to you. 

Links to Third-Party Sites 

The stockton.edu website may contain links to sites owned or operated by parties other than Stockton which links are made available solely for the convenience of users. This privacy policy applies only to the official Stockton University Web site and the goStockton portal and not to any additional Web sites or pages that may be linked to or from the official stockton.edu website. Stockton does not control outside sites, such as student, faculty or other organization’s website and is not responsible for their content.

Stockton supports the members of the university community in responsibly exercising their rights of free expression, but does not necessarily support the content of those expressions.
