An employee or a supervisor may initiate a classification review when the job duties and responsibilities of a position change to the extent they are no longer similar to their job description or specification. The opportunity to apply for reclassification when job responsibilities change is a contractual right for AFT Professional Staff, under the AFT collective bargaining agreement, and classified staff, governed by the New Jersey Administrative Code.

Human Resources assessment of applications for reclassification focuses on the nature, scope, and complexity of the additional job duties identified by the employee as prompting the request. Performing additional job duties that are within the scope of an employee's current job classification, and/or performing more of the job duties already assigned within title to a position, will not result in a reclassification

Reclassification Process

To apply for reclassification of a position, please complete the requisite form below and email to You will also need to submit:

  1. Original job description for current title
  2. Job description of requested title
  3. Departmental organizational chart
  4. Description of work currently being performed as new responsibilities that is different from original job description
  5. Description of work no longer being performed (if applicable)
