Placement Testing at Stockton University

Purpose of Placement Testing

Placement testing is a valuable resource that ensures proper course placement for incoming students. Our goal is to match students with the “just right” level of course–not too hard and not too easy. To ensure students do not feel rushed when they take their placement test, the exams are not timed. Placement testing is meant to provide the best course experience and most efficient pathway to a degree.

Students cannot pass or fail their placement tests. We encourage students to take the tests when healthy and well rested. Students should review the test preparation materials below to familiarize themselves with the subject matter and format of the exams.

Stockton uses College Board's Accuplacer testing platform.

How to schedule placement testing

In-person scheduling is done through Ospreys Navigate. Admitted students have access to this platform with their GoPortal credentials found in their acceptance letter. For your convenience, click here for a tutorial on scheduling testing through Ospreys Navigate.

Do I need to take a placement test?

  • You must complete placement testing for math, reading, and writing. If you did complete the SAT or ACT, you should submit these scores, as they will automatically place you for reading and writing, and exempt you from those portions of the Accuplacer exam.
  • You will be placed in a First-Year Seminar and writing course based on your SAT/ACT results.
  • If your Math SAT score was 570 or higher, or your Math ACT score was 24 or higher, you are exempt from math placement testing.
  • If your Math SAT score was below 570, or your math ACT score was 23 or lower, you must complete math placement testing.
  • If you have dual high school credits, you may be exempt from placement testing. You must submit the transcript(s) to Stockton University from the college or university that provided the dual high school course to determine if you are exempt from placement testing.

For specific questions, please email advising@stockton.edu

  • If you have Advanced Placement (AP) credits, you may be exempt from placement testing. You must submit the Official Score Report(s) to Stockton University from the College Board to determine if you are exempt from placement testing.

For specific questions, please email advising@stockton.edu

Transfer students with 16 or more credits are not required to take Accuplacer. However, those transfering into a Math, Science, Health Science, or Computer Science major are required to take the math exam(s) if they do not have credit for college level algebra.

You must submit the transcript(s) to Stockton University from any college or university that you attended to determine if you are exempt from placement testing.

For specific questions, please email advising@stockton.edu

You may need some, or all, of the placement testing sections depending on the transfer courses you are bringing in. You should consult with Academic Advising to confirm your need for placement testing. Generally, all students transferring in less than 16 credits need the reading exam. Equivalent writing and math courses may exempt you from those subject exams.

You must submit the transcript(s) to Stockton University from any college or university that you attended to determine if you are exempt from placement testing.

How can I prepare for placement testing?

May I retake my placement test?

  • You may take a second attempt on the math portions of the Accuplacer. If you have tested past the APQS (Quantitative Reasoning) exam into the APAA (Advanced Algebra & Functions) exam, you will only have to retake the APAA exam. You must wait one week to retake the exams. It is recomended that you use the study tools above to prepare for your retest.

Do I need to come to Stockton for placement testing?

College Board’s Accuplacer tests are universal, meaning the test questions are not specific to each institution. These tests are utilized by many colleges and universities throughout New Jersey. You may reach out to your local community college or university to see if they offer the Accuplacer.

If you choose to test at another institution who provides the Accuplacer, you must verify that they are offering the specific versions that Stockton uses for placement. These are "Next-Gen Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics", "Next-Gen Advanced Algebra and Functions", "Next-Gen Reading", and "Next-Gen Writing".

Taking the Accuplacer at Stockton is free of cost. Other locations will likely charge a proctoring fee which will vary depending on the institution. Testing dates and times at each institution will vary. Stockton does not arrange student appointments with other testing centers. Contact your preferred location to schedule an appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No, you may still submit your SAT/ACT scores even after you have applied as a test-optional student. Your Reading and Writing results will be used to place you in a First-Year Seminar and Writing (W1) course, respectively, regardless of your score. If your Math SAT score is above 570, or your ACT Math score is above 24, you will be placed based on these scores. If your Math SAT score is below 570, or your ACT Math score is below 24, you will still need to complete placement testing in mathematics.

Excuse letters will be available to any student who may need to take time off from school to complete their placement test. Ask your test administrator for details.

Accuplacer tests are untimed and consist of twenty multiple choice questions per subject. The amount of time needed to complete testing varies on a student-to-student basis. We reserve 3 hours for in person sessions, and if more time is needed, you may schedule an additional appointment to finish your exam.

You are not permitted to use a calculator for Accuplacer testing. However, some questions will have an interactive calculator available within the testing module. Scrap paper and pencils will be provided for your testing session(s).

Your test score(s) will be generated immediately upon completion of your session.

Course placement at Stockton

After 2 attempts at the Accuplacer, if you do not achieve the math-readiness score for your major, here are some options that we recommend:

  • Take a college-level Algebra course at a regionally accredited community college over the summer to fulfill the necessary math-readiness prerequistie for your desired major.
  • Begin as a “Conditional” concentration in your desired major and move through the required math course sequence to complete the prerequisites for math-readiness in your desired major.

Getting the required Advanced Algebra and Functions Accuplacer score does not equate to acceptance into the Nursing (BSN) program.

For additional information regarding Stockton's Prelicensure BSN program, visit their web page linked here.

Students that are interested in the Accelerated Nursing Program must have a conferred Bachelor's Degree with all required science courses. See the Accelerated Nursing page for admission criteria.

There is not an internal transfer program for the 4-year prelicensure Nursing Program.
