Course Description:

The importance of interdisciplinary education and collaboration between disciplines is critical to provide patients with the most beneficial services.  This course will examine interdisciplinary education and collaboration between a Speech/Language Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist in regard to patients with a sensory processing disorder.  Case study examples will be reviewed to demonstrate the complexities of working with an autistic child who exhibits a co-occurring sensory processing disorder and the impact this may have on speech/language therapy.  This course will discuss the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of a sensory processing disorder and the 8 sensory systems.  Characteristics of a sensory processing disorder will be examined to assist Speech/Language Pathologists in making appropriate referrals to Occupational Therapy.  Functional strategies that may be incorporated into speech/language therapy sessions will be reviewed and demonstrated.

Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Attendees will list 5 of the 8 sensory systems.
  • Attendees will list 1 strategy for 3 different sensory sensitivities.
