Unrecognized Groups

An unrecognized group is a group of students who are not recognized by Stockton University as a club, organization, fraternity, or sorority. These groups usually exist based on two different scenarios. The first is that a chapter whose recognition has been removed by the University or an inter/national organization, occasionally will choose to continue functioning without recognition or oversight as an organization. An organization may also be formed by a group of students who then operate under the guise of being a Greek-letter organization, but are not recognized by the University. Often, these groups portray themselves as seeking recognition, when they are really not. A list of groups seeking recognition can be found below.

Another way to think about it is that an unrecognized group is one which chooses to exist "off campus" and does not follow University policies and regulations. In many cases, these organizations seem to operate like recognized fraternities and sororities, but they are NOT affiliated with Stockton University.

It is important for a student who is interested in joining an unrecognized group to fully understand the implications of doing so.

These groups do not have any of the privileges that recognized organizations have earned. These include, but are not limited to; professional staff and alumni advising and support, proactive educational programming, leadership development, oversight of risk management efforts, service opportunities, academic support, and participation in social, intermural, and other campus and Fraternity & Sorority Life activities. In addition, they lack insurance and policies related to hazing and sexual harrassment. Students are also warned to stay away from unrecognized groups for safety reasons, as these students are not regulated in any way by the University.

Fraternity & Sorority Life recognizes organizations' work to demonstrate compliance with their founding values and principles by participating in the Fraternity & Sorority Life program, for which they recieve recognition and endorsement. Unrecognized groups do not participate in these efforts.

As a student, it is important to understand that if you choose to become a part of an unrecognized group, you will never be recognized by the University as a fraternity/sorority member.

Students are expected to know and abide by the regulations governing recognized student groups.  Students who join, accept membership or affiliate in any way with a student group whose recognition has been withdrawn are thereby in violation of Stockton University regulations and are subjected to judicial referral to the Campus Hearing Board, which may result in disciplinary action.  Students who assist in perpetuating these organizations are subject to the same disciplinary action.

Please note that the following fraternities and sororities are not recognized student organizations at this time and have no current affiliation with Stockton University since losing recognition. This list does not mean these organizations are operating without recognition:

These should not be confused with student groups working with Stockton University and seeking recognition.
