Remember that you have a great deal more control in the interview than you may think. Preparation is the key! Let’s break the interview down into its three distinct components – before, during and after the interview.

Self-Assessment

  • Clarify Your Goals: Know what job you want and why.

Preparation Tips

  • Mock Interviews: Schedule one with a Career Advisor.

First Impressions Matter

Research shows that within the first 4-9 minutes of an interview, interviewers often make a preliminary decision about whether to seriously consider you for the position. In short, you never get a second chance to make a first impression! Follow these updated guidelines to project a professional and positive image:

For Men:

DO:

  • Wear a dark suit with a white long-sleeved shirt, conservative tie, dark socks, and polished shoes.
  • Maintain good hygiene and use little or no cologne.
  • Minimize or cover prominent piercings or tattoos.

DON’T:

  • Avoid sports jackets, flashy ties, excessive jewelry, or earrings.
  • Don't carry a backpack or have bulging pockets.
  • Skip sneakers or topsiders and avoid heavy cologne.

For Women:

DO:

  • Wear a conservative dark suit with a coordinating blouse (not low cut) and low-heeled shoes, preferably matching the suit.
  • Maintain good hygiene and use little or no perfume.
  • Minimize or cover prominent piercings or tattoos.

DON’T:

  • Avoid flashy, faddish, or revealing clothing.
  • Limit jewelry, especially noisy bracelets, and avoid excessive makeup or glittery styles.
  • Don't use brightly colored or chipped nail polish 

Tip: Ensure your clothes are well-tailored and fit correctly. A well-fitted, less expensive suit can still look professional.

Many employers now use phone interviews as an initial step to screen candidates. To prepare effectively:

  • Be ready for a comprehensive interview, not just a quick chat. Keep a copy of your resume and your employer research materials nearby for easy reference.
  • Have a notepad and pen handy to take notes during the conversation.
  • Use a mirror to remind yourself to smile while speaking—your tone will naturally sound friendlier and more engaged. Standing while talking can also help you project confidence.
  • Eliminate distractions by turning off “call waiting,” TV, radio, and other devices to stay focused on the interview.

Virtual interviews have become a common way for employers to connect with candidates remotely. To excel in a virtual interview:

  • Technology Check: Ensure your computer, camera, microphone, and internet connection are all functioning properly. Test your setup in advance with a friend or family member.
  • Professional Environment: Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background. Make sure your surroundings are free of distractions, and notify anyone nearby that you need privacy.
  • Dress Appropriately: Dress as you would for an in-person interview. A professional appearance helps create a strong first impression.
  • Body Language: Sit up straight, make eye contact by looking into the camera, and avoid fidgeting. Your body language is just as important in a virtual setting.
  • Practice: Familiarize yourself with the video conferencing platform. Practice using its features, such as screen sharing or muting/unmuting, to ensure a smooth experience.

Behavioral Questions:

Situational Questions:

Task:

  • Outline your responsibilities: Explain what your specific role or challenge was in that situation. This shows your level of involvement and what was expected of you.

Action:

  • Detail what you did: Describe the steps you took to address the situation and complete the task. Focus on your actions and the strategies you used to handle the challenge.
  • Example: “I organized weekly progress meetings with team leaders, implemented a new project tracking system to monitor deadlines, and facilitated clear communication between departments to address any issues quickly.”

Result:

  • Highlight the outcome: Explain the results of your actions, including any achievements or improvements. Quantify the results if possible to provide concrete evidence of your success.
