GALLOWAY TWP., NJ The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will host the Third Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human and Civil Rights Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 5^th, 2006 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Stockton Performing Arts Center.

 

This years event will focus on the legacies of Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King and Dr. C. Delores Tucker and the role of women in the Civil Rights Movement.

 

Women have played an extraordinary part in the advancement of civil rights, although their contributions are often overlooked, said Dr. Pat Reid Merritt, Director of the Africana Studies Program at Stockton, which is one of the events sponsors.

 

The symposium will include presentations by Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells, Esq., Civil Rights Activist Edith Savage Jennings, Africana Studies Scholar Dr. Antoinette Ellis-Williams and a showing of the documentary film Mighty Times, which focuses on the life of Rosa Parks.

 

Other sponsors include the Office of Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells, Esq., the New Jersey Historical Commission and the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

 

The event is named in honor of Fannie Lou Hamer, whose impassioned plea for equal voting rights at the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City helped bring national attention to the issue.
