Course Description:

We are all exhausted by the COVID-19 experience and the hoops we have had to jump through in order to learn new technologies and develop quality programs. Yes, we need a break! Yet, we can use this opportunity to share our experiences and learn from one another during this workshop, which will focus on technology used to ameliorate reading and writing disorders.

Reading and writing programs and disorders differ and so do therapeutic approaches. There is no question that we are making a difference by integrating technology platforms to promote success for individuals with reading and writing disorders.

In May, 2019, The National Center for Education Statistics report indicated that 34% of students receiving special education services have specific learning disabilities. Many of these students struggle with reading and writing.  Due to the strong relationship among reading, writing, and spoken language, Speech and Language Pathologist play an important role in facilitating literacy, and in bridging the gap between typical and nontypical learners.

This course is as much about therapy approaches as it is about technology. It will begin with a brief overview of past and current reading programs, followed by a review of common literacy challenges with case samples. We will compare the American view of literacy with the global view. Ethical considerations regarding the choice and distribution of technologies will be presented and participants will reflect on their own experiences.

The second section of this webinar will focus on identifying disability characteristics, discussing the therapeutic rationale for choosing particular devices, and or demonstration. Tools within the Google Educational Suite, Google extensions, Kurzweil 3000 platform such as Kurzweil Read the Web, Firefly, and Kurzweil 3000 software will be demonstrated and we will review how these technologies can be used in combination with popular online reading resources.

The third section of this webinar will provide participants with the opportunity to practice using the technology through screen sharing on Zoom. In addition, participants will be given the opportunity to share some of their favorite literacy technologies as well as ask questions.

It should be noted that, although technology and therapy strategies focus on the adolescent population, they can be applied to provide assistance to all age levels and etiologies.

Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Participants will receive a brief overview of past and present reading and writing programs
  • Summarize the ethical considerations of literacy interventions in order to appropriately compare, and choose effective reading and writing assistive technology
  • Explore various technology platforms that assist individuals build an regain vocabulary skills, self monitor written language errors, note-take, abstract relevant information from written text, outline, and create hidden questions within a document in order to enhance comprehension
  • Discuss therapeutic learning strategies that target specific written language and cognitive impairments then correlate technology that promotes success
  • Access technology platforms and navigate the features on various internet connected devices, which can be combined with online literacy resources such as Bookshare.org, Readworks.org, Google Suite, etc.
